About Me

Any of you who follow me on Twitter will already know I’m a feminist atheist with a strong interest in politics and current events. I tweet regularly about those subjects, so why a blog? Well I live alone with the cumulative effects of a hockey injury, a fall, and a “medical misadventure.” (“Medical misadventure” is a legal term related to medical treatment – in my case an appendectomy – that goes majorly, and statistically unexpectedly, wrong.) These have resulted in three spinal surgeries and left me with ongoing pain and disability.

So most of the time there’s no-one around to talk to and when there is, they don’t really want to hear me pontificating. Besides, the pontificating is often about atheism and so they don’t want their kids to get corrupted. (The kids are usually there too because Aunty Heather has lots of Lego!)

I took to Twitter in October 2012 as an outlet, but oftentimes 140 characters just isn’t enough. So Heather’s Homilies was born. I’ve got a lot to say, and I want to say it. I don’t really care if anyone is listening, or if they agree with my point of view. But it’s nice if they are, and I welcome intelligent debate. I’ll even change my mind if the argument is good enough!

My degree is in history, but I’ve studied other subjects too and have other qualifications. I have about 25 years work experience in hospitals, schools, radio stations, a couple of government departments and a newspaper.

I love New Zealand and I’m very proud of my country. We lead the world in multiple international indices such as social progress, freedom, and lack of corruption, and are near the top in many others. But, we also recognize we’re not perfect and thus we’re constantly working to improve. We’re just too laid back to take the “exceptionalism” path! Thus, although there are only about 4.5 million of us, we Kiwis punch well beyond our weight on the world stage.

From the amazing country of New Zealand I am free to comment on anything I like without fear or favour. I hope you enjoy reading what I have to say as I solve the world’s problems, one blog at a time! ♥
