Day 12 of top tweets.
There’s another new category today: “Other Apes”. By “Other” I mean, of course, not humans. The inaugural entry (though it’s not the first ape tweet – that was here) is a baby Hanuman Langur, which I’ve never heard of before. There are more pictures and video if you click through to the story, but I’ve put the video here too.
I continue in my disgust with the US president. I’m in two minds about doing another post about what’s going on there. The number of tweets Trump is getting from people who support his stance is frankly scary. We all know that racists and bigots still exist everywhere. Humanity itself has not yet got to a place where we’re able to leave those things behind. But, you expect better from someone who’s the leader of the biggest democracy in the world. He should be setting an example.
Cat Tweets
I’ve been having trouble finding cat tweets recently, but Jerry Coyne reminded me of Emergency Kittens! I’ve followed this account for ages – I don’t know how I forgot! Anyway, as you can see I got a bit carried away on finding the account again …

Political Tweets
The world needs this guy back. If he had been the Dem’s candidate last year, would he have won? Yes, I know he’s only allowed to run twice, but imagine how he would deal with the current crises. Would they even exist?

This is from Ann German too. For those who didn’t hear Trump’s speech from Trump Tower, he made the “point” that the Alt-Right had a permit for their protest, while those countering them didn’t. Who did he get his talking points from? Whoever it was, the last person talking to him was clearly an Alt-Right supporter.

Did she look like that every day? It’s amazing what women went through back then to look good. When I was a teen it took three hours just to get a perm, and I believe there’s a time when it was even longer.

Human Rights Tweets
You may remember I posted a tweet the other day about six women being arrested for Zumba dancing in Iran. This is the women, and the dance they were arrested for. Aren’t they great?

The bravery of these women is amazing. What they are doing is getting a lot of support in Iran. The country doesn’t want to go back to the rule of the Shah, but they don’t want to retain what they have now either. There’s potential for peaceful change, but losing power is not something fascists do easily.

Great set Heather. Thanks for collecting these.
Cheers Rick. 🙂
The Shining and The Omen…the creepy midwife thingy on the right? Dunno. The Omen freaked me out as a kid because I was raised a christian dipshit. 666! Used to have a freaky meaning…muwahahaha. Anyway, Kubrick’s interpretation of The Shining strayed far from King’s novel, but it achieves what a horror movie should achieve: “There ain’t nothin’ ’bout room 237”.
I’m not sure about the woman on the right, but I wonder if she’s an Omen reference too? I like a good horror movie, though I haven’t seen many. These are two of my favourites though.
I was really scared by ‘The Exorcist’ when I first saw it. Though when I was a Christian I was always naturally a bit of a deist, and my family weren’t ott on religion, I was still really scared of the possibility of possession. That movie really freaked me out and gave me nightmares. I watched it again a few years ago after becoming an atheist. I was a bit worried it might still scare me, but it didn’t.
Yeah, ‘The Exorcist’ scared me too while in the tendrils of religion. I haven’t actually seen it since being an atheist…that’s 20 some years!
Re: the malt-shop waitress: Back in the Dark Ages, when I was doing my dissertation research, I ran across a study of eight-year-olds that just cracked me up.
The girls were asked, “If you woke up tomorrow and you were a boy, how would your life be different?” The boys were asked, “If you woke up tomorrow and you were a girl, how would your life be different?”
One of the boys answered, “It would take me a lot longer to get ready for school.”
L
Ha ha!
That reminds me of a study I was a part of at the age of about 7. We were asked to come up different types of a thing that was named. One of the things was “bag”. One boy in the group I was in said “old bag” and so was questioned further, “What type of old bag?” His answer: “Grouchy old bag!”
I also remember being fascinated by one of the women questioning us who laughed so hard her whole body wobbled. I’d never seen anything like it before.
My instant reaction to “bag” is “udder”, probably not, in this day and age, most people’s. I remember reading an H. Allen Smith essay that country people refer to grocery bags as “sacks”, to distinguish from “udder”.
Aahhh, my life in the dairy.
L
I have heaps of farmers of all types in the family. One if my sisters and her husband are dairy farmers. And I’ve never heard an udder called a bag! So it must be a USian thing? Either way, it’s interesting to know why some people there say grocery sack. 🙂
There is a product, an udder ointment, manufactured in Vermont, called Bag Balm. It’s really great stuff, too.
L
I know my brother-in-law uses an udder ointment that he praises greatly, but I don’t know what it’s called. I know it’s made in NZ though and contains lanolin, and he gets pissed off with one of his team because he puts it on at the wrong time no matter how many times he explains.
I believe India is the world’s biggest democracy? 😉
Yes, good point! You’re right of course. The sentence started as a snarky comment about the US believing they’re the world’s greatest democracy, and when I decided that wasn’t appropriate I screwed up.
