Well, rugby is trending in the Twitterverse in New Zealand for two reasons. One lot of tweets is because the All Blacks won again last night! We beat Australia 35-29, so the whole of New Zealand is in a good mood. That also means we retain the Bledisloe Cup for another year. We play two tests against Australia each year, and this year we won both, so the cup’s still ours.

Even better, in the early hours of the morning our time, our women’s rugby team, the Black Ferns, got the world championship back! Four years ago England took it off us when they won the last world cup. We met England in the final again this year, and we’re back on top!

So little old New Zealand is world champions in both men’s and women’s rugby, as well as 7s rugby (men’s seven-a-side).

 

 

This short video was made following the Black Ferns semi-final win against the USA, which gave them their place in the final against England.

I have to keep reminding myself that there’s beauty in the US too. The ugliness that comes from the White House tends to obscure that.

 

This is just gorgeous. You could look at this for hours and still see new things. Thinking of the work and skill that’s gone into it blows the mind. I know they don’t speak French in Austria, but the word “incroyable” always sounds right to me for places like this.

 

Wherever you go in Italy there’s something lovely to see.

 

There are so many amazing and unexpected things in India.

 

It’s great what can be done when you have a lot of people, a lot of imagination, and not much land that can be built on. It doesn’t have to be endless ugly high-rises.

    Heather, a small correction. In the international rugby sevens, NZ ended 4th this past 2016-17 season. Rugby sevens is played annually over 10 tournaments in 10 different countries. South Africa were very dominant this year, they won the title during the ninth tournament in Paris, when their points advantage became unassailable. I think they won 7 of the 10 tournaments. England and Fiji were nrs 2 and 3 respectively.
    The 2015-16 and 2014-15 titles were won by Fiji. So for the last 3 years NZ has lost it’s dominance. The last time NZ won it was in the 2013-14 season. SA were the runner up in all tournaments since the 2012-13 season (also won by NZ).

      Yes, I know we have lost our 7s dominance in recent years and aren’t doing well in the annual competition. We’re not Olympic champions anymore either. But, we’re still world champions from 2013. The next world championship isn’t until 2018. I can’t see us winning, but at the moment we still have the title. Four-yearly will start again from then.

      I did forget to add that we’re world junior champions too.

        No I do not see the NZ Seven’s winning the 2017-18 title either, but one never knows. Implosion of SA and Fiji? Even if ‘only’ in fourth place, they are still close to the top.
        However, I do see the All Blacks (15’s) retaining their title won in 2013. Any particular reason why you do not see them winning it again? At present they appear the world’s best team in 15’s rugby, immo.

          I mean, the All Blacks (15’s) make very few handling errors (Sunnyboy’s 4 errors in the first half of the last match against Australia were very uncharacteristic), very strong in the break-offs, pleasant to watch running rugby, masters in the art of the offload during tackles, clever kicking and strong tactics generally, creative and good finishers, reasonable to good discipline (possibly their weakest -or rather least strong- point), physical and extremely fit compared to some other outfits. And ‘depth’: the loss of say Ritchie Mc Caw -excellent captain as he is/was- or several other greats does not appear to make any difference. Very, very professional. The best winning record of any team since 2013. Why would they not retain their title?
          I admit they were not at their best in the last match, and were a little bit lucky, but even on an ‘off day’: they still won against Australia, no slouches by any measure.
          I see only four teams that could possibly (possibly, not probably) beat them in a particular match: Australia, England and South Africa -and France, on a good day they can beat anybody, but they have irregular ‘good days’.

            I agree with your analysis. Not long ago, I wouldn’t have included England, but they seem to have finally worked out that open, running rugby is the way to go and what kept NZ and SA, and late Aus dominant for so long.

            Sonny Bill didn’t have a good game on Saturday – he seemed to not be himself at all. There’s a tendency to mark him out of the game though, which leaves gaps elsewhere. At the beginning of the game Aus were covering those gaps – their fitness looks better than ever before. But our bench is stronger so it couldn’t last.

          I agree about 15s – at the moment we’re still best at that and we have the Junior World Cup too, so there are plenty of good players coming through. The last time the World Cup for 7s was played was 2013 – that’s what I was referring to. The timing was changed, and the four-yearly cycle begins again 2018. At the moment I see you guys as the best there. A lot of teams have been improving heaps since it became an Olympic sport, so while I expect us to always be in the top 4, we’re not going to win it consistently like we used to.

      The amount of rain is really blowing me away. I hear them talking in inches, and when I convert it (to proper measurements 🙂 ) and realize how much they’re talking about, it’s almost unbelievable. We get fairly regular flooding in some places in NZ, but nothing like that!

    Yes, I also find it difficult to estimate sizes that are measured “improperly”. 10 inches is much more than 10 centimeters; on the other hand 10 feet is much less than 10 meters. 🙂
    When I was a kid, a river streaming through our town overflowed and left mud on walls of nearby houses up to -only- two or three meters high (or should I say low?). I remember that we could easily cross some bridges the day after, so damages must have been negligible in comparison with the consequences of Katrina, Harvey and the hurricanes. I am most grateful for our luck
