I’ve been back home for three days now but I’ve been feeling ghastly and wasn’t really up to tweets. I probably could’ve done it, but that would have meant a delay in my recovery and I had to be well again by today. Why? It’s election day in New Zealand and I’ve never missed voting since I became eligible in 1984.
I think voting is really important and everyone should do it if they possibly can. I have no time for people who say that they’re not voting as a “protest.” Not voting is NOT a protest, it’s an excuse for laziness. A protest vote is rocking up to the polling place and spoiling your ballot paper in some way. You can cross out all the names, write in a new name, or just leave it blank. But not voting, in my opinion, is abandoning your responsibilities as a citizen.
Just before I left on Monday I got a phone call from a political pollster. Naturally one of the questions was who I would vote for if the election were held that day. I gave them an answer, but the truth was I had yet to make a decision. Usually I’m sure well in advance, but this year it was a more difficult choice. However, I have now done my duty and voted.
I think it will be a fairly high turnout election this year. Last time turnout was 76.77%, which is low for New Zealand. It’s unlikely we’ll have a final result tonight though. The polls are all over the place and it looks likely that one of the smaller parties will get to decide which major party leads the government. Unfortunately, that smaller party will probably be NZ First, which is the one party I can’t understand anyone voting for. I have an great dislike for their leader, Winston Peters, and I think he is a risk to our extremely stable democracy.
We have a proportional representation system in New Zealand called MMP, or Mixed Member Proportional. (You can read all about it here.) Because of the way the election is going, even if the party that leads the government doesn’t change, their coalition partners likely will. A party has to get five percent of the national vote, or win an electorate set, to get into parliament. The party I like most probably won’t do that, therefore voting for them is a waste of a vote. It’s a bit like the 2016 elections in the US. If you live in one of the states where the election is close, it’s important to vote for one of the main parties.
The party that is closest to my own opinions is United Future. There is a non-partisan survey you can do to see which NZ political party your opinions are closest to. It’s called Vote Compass, and you can try it out here. When I did it, it gave me confirmation of where I see myself. (That’s one of the graphs I got from Vote Compass in the pic.) The new leader of that party, 34 year-old Damian Light also impresses me a great deal. However, as I said, there’s not much point voting for them. Further, the race between the two main parties – National and Labour – is very tight. I have a definite preference for one over the other and so I voted for that party to give them the best chance possible of forming a government.
On to the tweets. Some of these are as much as a week old now – I’ve got a fair bit of catching up to do!

This is appalling. Imagine a young girl being hounded by three men to cover her hair or her car will be impounded. It’s not proper policing. It doesn’t make the public safer!

“Put on your head scarf or we’ll confiscate your car.” When you think about the millions of women who spend their entire lives–their only lives–under such oppression, it’s staggering. I’m sure it won’t change at all in our lifetimes and probably several others’ after us as well.
Nice cartoon, Heather!
Elections here in Germany on Sunday, but I can’t vote as I’m not a citizen. I took a survey though and it showed the Greens in 64.5% agreement with my positions, closely followed by the CDU and the “Linke” on 63.5%. The Linke Partei is the reformed version of the communist party that ran the GDR — very close to the CDU on many things these days!
Distant fourth was the SPD on 50% agreement with my opinions. The SPD has some stupid ideas about Israel and is way too close to Russia (ie Putin) for my liking.
The main question seems to be how much the loons in the racist/stupid AfD (Alternative for Deutschland) will gain this time. The next election in four years will show will be more of a contest.
Kind of amazing that the CDU and the ‘Linke’ see eye to eye on so much.
The problem (IMMO) of Europe is that only the extreme right fringe (“the loons”) appears to recognise or admit there is a problem with Islam/islamic immigration in Europe and (again IMMO) there is a real problem. It funnels a lot of voters who are not really sympathetic, or even opposed, to the extreme right, right into their arms. Appears a lose-lose situation to me.
Germany will certainly have to start dealing with the problem of Islamic extremism more effectively than it has done so far. It empowers the Neo-Nazis who are in fact a far more imminent danger to society, and are already targeting Jews and social justice types in the outer suburbs of Berlin. And Russia is of course now a real existential threat to European peace.
For now, I would be happy to see Merkel get in again, but I hope Germany starts seriously opposing extremists in society, and building up its military and encouraging the rest of the EU to do the same.
It sounds like the far right AfD is getting a fair bit of traction there. It will be interesting to see the results there.
Germany has one of the better electoral systems in the world imo.
Glad you recovered enough to vote in NZ’s election. The US electorate does a very poor job but part of the problem is the idiocy of voting on a weekday and restrictions of time and place. Seems the rest of the democratic world does it better. Hope the outcome is what you hoped.
I thought you might like the famous photograph of Peter Freuchen (mentioned in your september 17 post) and his wife Navarana Mepuqualuk and their 2 children. It is a kind of haunting photo for one reason or other.

Could not find out what happened to the children, Freuchen saw a great future for them. Did they fall victim to the Spanish flu too?
Snow Leopard or Canadian Lynx? Who’s going to win the contest for the most gorgeous paws? 🙂 Not easy.
If we saw just an isolated paw picture, could we tell which one it is? (Yes we could, but only after doing our homework)
I doubt I could tell, to tell the truth. Someone would have to educate me.
On the “Good Question”: the Popemobile does not show all the ‘cupboarded’ skeletons or raped choirboys in the RCC’s chest. Not fair.
True dat.
I was happy to see your Tweets in my inbox this morning. Thanks as always for your efforts and good taste and I’m glad to hear you are feeling better. I hope the people you voted for win!
One reason I think the dogs will always win the dogs vs. cats debate is exemplified with the likes of Frida.
I liked the cartoon about “We are destroying the earth”. But the briefcase shouldn’t say ‘government’ it should say the GOP…as you pointed out, it is only they who deny and obfuscate climate change. The ‘government’ isn’t the problem; a greedy and evil political party is.
And why do christians say things like ‘abortion industry’ (other than the easy answer that they are deluded)? What are they reading or watching that gives them that idea? So many Americans are so very stupid, especially the religious variety.
That phrase “abortion industry” always grates with me. The religion industry makes multiple times more money and destroys a lot more lives. Some will argue that religion saves some people. That’s true, but so does abortion, despite what the extremists think. Before you even get properly into the arguments for and against, there’s the women for whom pregnancy is a death sentence. There are a lot of other lives saved by abortion too, but this isn’t the right place to get into them.
I didn’t know you’d been unwell, Heather, but I’m glad you’re recovering.
Thanks mate. I’m not really that bad. It’s more that the pain I’m in all the time gets badly exacerbated when I have illnesses that have symptoms like making your joints ache plus a week-long fever. At the same time I had to travel to another city for a couple of days to attend medical and other appointments. It was all a bit beyond my very limited physical capacity. I’m mostly back to normal now, though normal for me is pretty crap for most people.
