I’ve finally done what I’ve been resisting for years and joined Facebook yesterday.
It wasn’t all bad – the first thing I saw when I “found a friend” was a photo of my niece on her first day at pre-school. That was pretty cool. Then later I messaged with my brother who was sitting in a cafe in Breda before making his way to the airport to catch a flight to Oslo. He sent me a picture of a fascinating archaeological site in Gaza – he’d been in Israel before the Netherlands. I’m very jealous of all the amazing places he gets to go for his job!
Anyway, I created a page for Heather’s Homilies, and promptly created a photo album of great atheism and free speech related quotes on my personal page instead of the Heather’s Homilies page, so I’m going to have to do it all over again! I suppose I’ll work it all out eventually.
You may have noticed I haven’t posted much here recently. My back’s been pretty bad, and I haven’t felt much like writing anything substantial. That’s one of the reasons I joined Facebook actually. It’s sort of an intermediate place between Twitter and the website. I’ll write short pieces there that either don’t merit a full post or I don’t physically feel up to writing a full post about.
I’ll also post things that have piqued my interest, and I hope you’ll find interesting too.
So, I hope you’ll Like and Follow my Heather’s Homilies page on Facebook.
Soon, there’ll be a button at the top of the page to make that easier, along with one for Google+, but that’s something the great people at BuildBusiness, who host my site, are still working on for me.
Some of you might even want to be friends too. π
Facebook! Oh my word! I still don’t really know what Facebook is. I had one briefly but I deleted it. Because I couldn’t tell what was private and what was public. Is your Facebook page one of the ones where you have to have Facebook to read it? Because I know the Freedom from Religion Foundation has a Facebook page that you can just go to from Twitter, without having Facebook. So anyway I’d be interested to hear about what it’s like having Facebook.
As for your sore back, holy crap! Are they ever awful. There’s nothing you can do except lie flat as a pancake where you weren’t actually using all your back muscles. I won’t say “feel better soon” I’ll say rest well. Read all of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy books or something like that to keep your mind occupied. Incidentally, there are Scott and Bailey books. I have a lot of experience with Mandatory Downtime. I don’t know what your boo-boo is but if it involves muscle tightness pain Olbas oil is incredible. Or just straight peppermint aromatherapy oil, rubbed on. I know it sounds like some idiotic alternative medicine thing. It’s not. Peppermint oil is a mild topical analgesic. If you use it wash your hands well or you’ll put peppermint oil in your eye. That would hurt.
I’ll try and see you on Facebook. Cheers.
Hi Conn. I’m still a bit mixed up about what’s public and what’s private too. There’s a lot I haven’t put on, and I’m still wondering if I’ve put on too much! I think you can look at the page even if you don’t have Facebook, but I’m not sure. I’m assuming I’ll work it all out before too long. Millions have managed before me!
I’m a bit nervous about the whole thing also because of the recent attack on atheist pages by fundamentalist Christians. However, I doubt I’ll ever be important enough for them to take any notice of me.
As for my back, my injury is permanent. I just have good days and bad days, and worse days. Basically, I just have to wait for it to get back to the handle-able stage again. One of the massage creams I have has peppermint oil in it – it’s great. It’s not long since I re-read the Hitchhikers books again – they’re genius! I love them. π I didn’t realize Scott and Bailey were books – I love the TV series.
I was your ninth like-er! I always liked you (from WEIT, of course); now I “Like” you.
Looking forward to seeing your stuff in my FB feed: I went to school in rural Nevada, USA so I mostly get goddy posts.
Thanks ManOutOfTime – I really appreciate your support! I enjoy your comments on WEIT too. π

I’ve tried facebook twice, I won’t try it a 3rd time, it’s not for me.
Sorry to hear about your back, mine plays up more as I age. 3 prolapsed discs, nothing I can do about it, just have to put up with it.
Hi Graham. I can understand why some people wouldn’t want to join Facebook – like I said, I’ve avoided it for years. Sorry to hear about your back too – it’s another of the prices we pay for evolution. Our human back sure as hell isn’t intelligently designed!
Ugh, I hear ya about pain. It just exhausts you! I’ve not written much either because I’m so tired.
Hi Diana. I hope things have improved a bit by now, but I suppose in the circumstances they haven’t. π I don’t know how you manage to work as well as go through everything else.
I feel somewhat better now. I’m hoping it was just a stupid infection that is clearing.
I’m glad. I did see you stayed up ’til 10pm last night! π
Yeah like a big girl!
Traitor!
π
Well, if your page is public, I’ll be able to have a look, but sorry in advance for being unable to “Like” you there. I do like you here. π
So sorry about your back. Good thing you are such a cerebral person, able to keep busy with those sorts of pursuits. (When pain allows!) Take care.
Hi Diane. I did think of you when I decided to join! π I’d be interested to know if you can still see stuff I write there – I hope so. Mostly I’ve only posted interesting stuff so far, but I have written a long comment:
I hope that worked. Soon find out I suppose when I reply.
Actually, I do feel lucky about being interested in lots of things. Even though I mostly spend all day alone in a recliner, I almost never get bored. There’s plenty to keep my brain occupied. I miss the stuff I can’t do, but most of the time I’m too busy thinking about other stuff to dwell on it.
OK, I just tried it, and clicking the date is what takes you to what I wrote.
If you can read what I wrote on Facebook, I’d appreciate it if you could let me know. π Then I could put up a weekly summary of something for those who can’t get to it easily.
Well, that not only worked, but after reading that post (well done!) I clicked on the “Heather’s Homilies” at the top and went to your home page, where I spent much time scrolling through your content. So captivating! My gosh you are prolific. Wonderful assortment of topics, there.
Cool! Thanks for that Diane. π
I just remembered last night though that Facebook owns the copyright of anything I write there, so maybe I should be careful about writing too much there.
Love the “if the earth was 10′ closer to the sun” post! Bet Jerry would as well.
I love that one too! Jerry might have seen it because I put it on my personal page as well as he’s a “friend”.
Well, isn’t that presumptive of them.
